Global Athlete is a new international athlete-led movement whose aim is to inspire and lead positive change in world sport, and collectively address the current imbalance of power between athletes and sporting leaders. We aim to help athletes gain a more represented voice in world sport.

2019 has been a momentous year for global sports governance and the athlete voice, and a time viewed by many as the year when athletes spoke up and were finally heard. It has been a real pleasure for Global Athlete to have listened to you, worked with you, learnt from you and supported your rights.  The athletes’ voice is getting stronger, sports leaders are finally starting to pay attention and change is in the air.

Following our update last month, we thought we would provide further information on the issues we are tackling and paying attention to Olympic Charter Rule 40, Olympic Charter Rule 50, Athlete Safety and Welfare & more.

Global Athlete and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee Athlete Advisory Council fully support the IOC’s call for the toughest sanctions, which according to the International Compliance Standard, would include the complete ban of the entire Russian Olympic Committee and its athletes from the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Increase in athlete engagement would speak directly to growing athlete voice and would ensure fight against doping is enhanced, say athletes.

“Global Athlete supports the Global Throwing community, the USATF Athlete Advisory Committee and the Athletics Association headed by its founder Christian Taylor, with its call for World Athletics to reverse its decision to drop disciplines from Diamond League”.

For every athlete that goes to the Olympics, the dream all started when they were a little boy or girl. There are thousands of children across the world with that same dream. In the past week alone, I have met two children who told me that their dream is to go to the Olympics. I see the joy in their little faces, their belief in themselves and their desire to make their dream come true. I know what it is like to have that dream at their age.

Global Athlete has today agreed to fully support Team GB athletes’ (British Olympic athletes) legal action against the British Olympic Association (BOA) over the restrictive nature of the organization’s Olympic Charter Rule 40 guidelines around marketing at Tokyo 2020.
